Why did the gods live on a mountain?

In Greek mythology, most of the major gods lived on a mountain. I wonder if the mountain was meant as a symbol for something approaching omniscience? (as when one gets to the top of a mountain with a clear view in all directions, there is a large amount of information about the surrounds that is therefore available to one)
